I think one of the best examples of the contrast in Birmingham is The Castle & Falcon. A pub and live music venue in what was originally an Irish area, it is now a little enclave of White "alternative" culture in a Pakistani dominated slum. I have heard from women who have been to gigs there how they feel unsafe around the "locals". That would be a more honest exploration of some of the problems with Birmingham than Bastani's interviews.

Good breakdown of the views of Bastani and co.

I don't think these phenomena are very unique to Birmingham though, plenty of other inner cities, suburbs and satellite towns.

Birmingham is interesting in that even more so than other cities it houses some of the most productive and most draining members of the population in very close proximity (although they don't mix much).

Despite all the ‘levelling up’ money that gets thrown at the north in general and Manchester in particular, Birmingham is still larger and richer than the latter; even with the large numbers of often foreign born who are either welfare dependent or work in the black market. An article that explores this dynamic and the other Birmingham - the mostly English, modern industrial, quietly confident, lacking the northern chip on the shoulder Birmingham would be good to see.

I think you have to see these people calling Birmingham 'fascinating' as a half step from them admitting their worldview has created a disaster. They can't really just turn round and say 'that thing I have been advocating for until three seconds ago (and still will for social reasons) has had dreadful outcomes that I should have seen arriving'

Nowadays, I go straight to “get to fuck” as soon as I hear a progressive leftist name, which saves a lot of time.

Leftists always lie. It's a good shortcut to save time.

Bastani’s doc does very briefly mention yakoob’s career but i agree that blink and you miss

It.

Also while i agree that Lavour cronyism is a hubris the partydeserves to pay for, he doesn't interrogate why someone like Yakoob and his accolites would never make

It through mainstream parties for

Extremely good and legit reasons. Having said that, find me reporting on the “Gaza” independents that lets speak like normal people like Bastani does. Eg the interview he had with the hijabi councillor candidates.. All they talked about was council corruption and cost of living and priorities.

You seem to have some problems with writing coherent English.

It's almost an acid test, the adjectives people on the left and right use for The YooKay.

We on the right use "broken", "sectarian" etc.

Those on the left like Bastani use "fascinating". He knows something's not right, something is jarring. He sees it, but can't call it.

So reaches for positive works like "fascinating".

I mean, a multi vehicle pile up is "fascinating", but first, it's "tragic", "disasterous" etc.
