I have seldom read an article in Pimlico Journal more riddled with dubious assumptions. The notion the Russkiy Mir has ever been anything but a predatory corrupting threat to the rest of Europe is laughable.
Lots of immense talent and human capital. Beautiful art, great scientists, strong men (and women).
Historically, even given its relatively large population and natural resources, it has punched above its weight.
Yet for all of that they fail over and over again, largely because pathological corruption seems to just be a way of life there, and always has been. Yes, western countries are corrupt, and are probably becoming more corrupt, but in Russia it seems the corruption penetrates every level of society, such that the non-corrupt make up a tiny and insignificant faction.
There are many high IQ people in Russia, but for some reason they tend to become psychopathic mafia bosses of one kind or another.
Dominic Cummings remarked that Russia is alien in a way that China isn't, because China is a functioning society where people can actually work towards common goals.
Personally, I am not sure I agree. I think I can relate to Russians as European Christians more than I can relate to mainland Chinese and other deep Asian cultures, who I find interesting but almost entirely alien. But it's an interesting point.
Ultimately, I think the west will need to ally with and hopefully integrate Russia in order to counterbalance China. When you think about how the CCP historically have no compunction killing their own population on a massive scale, the threat they pose to the West is existential. Ethnic bioweapons etc.
Russia's current government is certainly deeply corrupt but comparatively human, and also not innately opposed to our interests.
