Great to have some positive suggestions , rather than just the same old complaints . Some brief random thoughts spurred by your piece :

1. No plan will work , as you state , if the British bureaucracy running it is not fit for purpose . The country needs a Javier Milei style “thinning out” and reduced “re planting” . Some policy help from the likes of Tony Abbott would not go amiss .

2. Targets for acceptable volumes ought to refer to pre 1997 history - when it appeared that the country had got it about right . We should never forget that Japan doubled its refugee intake in 2018 to 60 pax !

3. The Commonwealth should be a priority as a source of immigration for any new policy.

4. Having ditched all the Blair legislation and left the ECHR , cancelled automatic family joining rights , dramatically reduced student intake ( bankruptcy for lesser UK facilities an added advantage) , there should still be deportation agreements with Rwanda and Albania for those rejects / criminals with no nationality documentation .

Keep up the good work !

What do you mean the Commonwealth? Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Papua New Guinea? If you mean the white Anglo-Saxon commonwealth, do not be so coy with the terminology, but I agree. Maybe even more than simple visa routes could be discussed for them, a specialised visa or even freedom of movement (ala CANZUK). If not, why would you want more of the same problematic immigration. Non-white Commonwealth migration is the majority of the non-white population of the UK and it has proven to be a negative. How is a Pakistani or a Nigerian preferable to a German, Norwegian, Japanese, South Korean or a Chilean, solely on the basis of affiliation with our decadent monarchy's pet project?

I say the Commonwealth in its current form should be abolished and ties should be cut with these parasites who wanted us out of their countries but demand free access to ours. If we should keep a Commonwealth, let it be with our fellow Anglo-Saxons and maybe some highly-developed ex-colonies like Singapore and Malta. Do Pakistan or Nigeria even have a desire to be "Commonwealth" outside of anything but parasitism. The average Pakistani cares more for the Ummah or the Subcontinent than this "pan-British commonwealth". I am sure your average Nigerian has more affiliation with a neighbouring francophone Bantu than a Scot or Anglo-Canadian.

I take issue with you as to the potential of the Commonwealth. I believe many who have come to Britain subscribed fully to the ideas and practice of what made Britain successful and prosperous . They gave allegiance to these - they understood that these benefits can apply to them if they are fully prepared to abide not only by the laws and regulations but also by manners and customs ( viz Lord Acton ) .

When you drop all requirements for incomers to align and when you don’t even know who has come in , courtesy of that treasonous Blair government , then allow it to continue under Cameron’s hideous multi culturalism , you are inviting disaster and a breakdown of the system. That is where we are now .

So ; prioritise the Commonwealth for a vastly reduced immigration; make family joining subject to stringent tests ; conduct all application reviews off shore , deport failed applicants , all illegals and convicted criminals and their families; strict limits on student numbers and no family joining rights for them .

The Commonwealth has vast potential in joining with Britain in trade and services , research and development , defence and many others aspects of life , for mutual benefit and prosperity.

Oh ; and I almost forgot ! Don’t pay the french another penny . Have the Royal Navy and Border Force ships patrolling the Channel and North Sea and turning back boats ( as with the highly effective Australian policy ).

Finally and most provocatively we need to get round to cancelling the arrangements with Eire . The need for any past obligations to continue is long gone : the ability of a foreign hostile member of the EU to have such one-way rights in the UK is utterly absurd . If that results in them erecting a hard border with Northern Ireland , so be it .

In fact the Royal Navy should take responsibility for sea protection of the borders and fisheries. It will need a lot more patrol boats and an offshore processing centre)possibly on an uninhabited channel island). All illegal immigrants should be identified with DNA and sentenced to a lifetime ban from the UK. If you try to come to the UK illegally you are a criminal and therefore will never be allowed into the UK. That is the Australian policy. Once illegal migrants understand that the UK is impossible to enter illegally they will shift their attentions to softer targets. A long term detention centre is also required. Ascension Island?

…… and finally, none of this will happen with a socialist government. So a vote of confidence in Parliament is required…..

Excellent system overall, but why should foreign spouses be visa-exempt? They aren’t at present, and spousal visas are quite expensive. Why loosen this particular criterion?
